Be aware, the following review is extremely positive but does truly disclose my opinion and nothing else. To spare you reading the entire blog post: if you haven’t had vegan food from Zest yet, you are missing out on a lot!
Zest is one of the oldest health-food restaurants in Dubai. They opened their first branch in Dubai in 2005 (at that point I was still in high-school and probably didn’t even know Dubai existed). The focus is on offering nutrient rich healthy food and the menu caters to all kind of diets (including vegan). The location is very close to Miracle Garden so you can plan in a stop there before / after or simply order to your home.
The menu offers many vegan options for breakfast (available all day), starters, mains, desserts, juices and snacks, which are clearly labelled as vegan. It actually took us quite long to decide what we wanted to eat as there were so many great options available! In the end we went for the Organic Vietnamese Wrap, the Moroccan Lentil Soup and the Vegan BBQ Burger before we started indulging into vegan sweets!
Never having tried a Vegan BBQ Burger before I didn’t know what to expect from it – once I had the first bite I was absolutely blown away by it. Considering the fact that Zest does not use any processed food (yes – they do make the vegan mayo, vegan barbecue ketchup and even the vegan & gluten-free bun themselves!) I actually didn’t think a burger could be that flavorful. We then had the Organic Vietnamese Wraps with home-made peanut-style sauce and the Moroccan Lentil Soup and I realized that what I’m doing at home in the kitchen and many of the vegan dishes I have tried in the past have nothing to do with good, healthy & tasty food. In other words: both dishes (so simply, yet so good) set a whole new bar for me how food without processed ingredients should actually taste.
With the food we had the Pinky Perky, a freshly prepared juice out of oranges, strawberry and apples. As someone that has a cold-pressed juicer at home I can definitely judge that this one was amazing – true fruit taste and a great combination. There are many other juices, smoothies and even juice packages available at Zest and they are reasonably priced!
Now the sweet treats: We couldn’t resist to try the vegan pancakes as they are still difficult to find in Dubai. The ones at Zest are also gluten-free and taste great (made with bananas)! The pancakes were served with home-made chocolate sauce (which is also available to purchase in a bottle for at home) and berry compote! Both options were equally great, but as a chocolate-lover I’d always go for the home-made chocolate sauce again!
Finally, we had the vegan cinnamon bun and the vegan donut. It was our first time trying a vegan cinnamon bun and we didn’t expect it to taste that much like the non-vegan ones. The dough, amount of cinnamon, sweetness and frosting on top – everything was perfect. For the vegan donut you can choose your desired topping. The options are chocolate, chocolate & sprinkles, activated charcoal, pink pitaya or green matcha and guess what? We went for the one with Belgian chocolate & hazelnut sprinkles and I really am not sure if I liked the donut or the cinnamon bun better as both of them were simply delicious.
Additionally to all the great dishes on the menu, Zest also offers (vegan) catering, juice cleanses, home-made plant mylk, home-made salad dressings & sauces and cookies & bars. We took the Rocky Road Bar home, which is a vegan and gluten-free nut & chocolate bar. It’s sweetened with dates & maple syrup and was a great (sweet) breakfast replacement in the next morning! Additionally we took a bottle of Probiotic Tonic home, which is of course also in-house made and offers a great way to help digestion and helps to a healthier gut and overall well-being.
I can absolutely promise you that the team at Zest is 100% knowledgeable about what a vegan diet is exactly and you will never be disappointed by the great taste of the dishes as the owner Christina is vegan herself and tries out new recipes over and over again until they are simply perfect. Many restaurants nowadays are offering vegan options because they believe it will help them increase sales, however with Zest I’m confident to say that these vegan options have been created with a lot of love and believe in the vegan diet and lifestyle.
