To be honest – sometimes I just check out a supermarket I haven’t been to yet to see if they’ve got any other vegan ice cream in stock that I haven’t tried yet! Living in such a climate ice cream is essential to everyone, if you ask me. As that being said, during my first couple of months in Dubai I almost always got my vegan ice cream supply from Baskin Robbins (there are 68 outlets in Dubai!!). They had a super delicious vegan chocolate sorbet, which I used to sprinkle with crushed almonds. However apparently I was the only person in Dubai that was obsessed with this ice cream and one day they decided to no longer continue the chocolate sorbet!
Luckily I discovered that Grom Ice Creams offers a nice range of fruit sorbets, which are all made with only organic and raw materials from Piedmont, Italy. That means there are no additives such as emulsifiers, which normally makes ice cream foamy, no artificial thickeners, or artificial colors in any of Grom’s ice creams (even the non-vegan ones). As a result it’s super flavorsome, melting faster and sometimes less colorful than comparable flavors with artificial additives.
At the moment there are three branches in Dubai – one in the Dubai Mall, another one at the Boxpark and one in the Mall of the Emirates. I visited their outlet at the Mall of the Emirates, which is located at the corner of Go Sports on the second Floor next to the entrance to the Sheraton.
When I went to Grom for the first time I had to try their flavor of the month (I think that was in April though and it’s not available right now anymore): Strawberry Sorbet with Chocolate Sprinkles! It was good, super fruity and natural and as promised – melting fast (I didn’t even have time to take a proper picture because it started melting right away). But the chocolate sprinkles didn’t really create enough chocolate flavor for me to fall in love with it. The second time I visited Grom at the Mall of the Emirates I chose three different scoops: blueberry, lemon and mango! Other than that they also have a peach and a strawberry sorbet. All of their ice creams have allergen labels and are even labeled as vegan, if they are! Apparently the outlet in the Dubai Malls offers a bigger variety of flavors though (I’ll keep you updated once I find out – or shot me a comment if you do so before me ;)).
But now back to my second visit at Grom at the Mall of the Emirates: all three scoops were really rich in natural flavor, especially the blueberry one, which stood out by tasting like super smooth frozen blueberries. The lemon and mango ice cream felt a little bit smoother in texture though – but all three were great!
Other than fruit sorbets Grom doesn’t have much to offer for vegans though – they do coffee and sometimes have frozen fruit lollies in stock but you should stay away from all their biscuits, cones and obviously whipped cream! The other downside is the price of the ice cream: you pay 19 AED for a small cup with one or two different flavors. Tip: Use the styck app to be rewarded for doing a certain amount of steps and get a cup like mine for free!
