February 2019 Update:
Please be aware that the pancakes turned out not be vegan (even though I was told they were) – lesson learnt. However The menu is still full of vegan options and the last time I visited (2018) I tried their vegan cheese board which was delicious and such a nice treat as well! Their daily lunch offer includes vegan options almost every single day as well.
Having researched a lot about being vegan in Dubai and vegan restaurants in Dubai Comptoir 102 is a place that has been mentioned a lot of times for their great vegan options and is even listed on happycow.net. It took me more than half a year to finally check it out, but now I have and want to share my experience with you!
Comptoir 102 is located in Jumeirah and a concept store with an attached health café in a small one-story villa. In the small store you can find designer furniture, fashion, jewelry and extraordinary decoration as well as a small organic food section (I’ve spotted my most favorite raw chocolate from Pana Chocolate there!). There is a small terrace, which was closed due to summer temperatures when we visited, and two lovely decorated separated dining rooms from each other with the kitchen in between. Comptoir 102 only tries to use as many local organic ingredients as possible and focuses on creating more sustainable and nutritious food.
We sat down at the window overlooking the terrace and started checking the vegan options on the menu. Since everything on the menu is sugar- and dairy-free anyways that wasn’t too challenging and we had troubles deciding what do eat. First we had one ‘Heaven on Earth’ and ‘Essential Green’ Smoothie from their diverse drinks menu, which includes coffee, tea, smoothies and fresh juices. Both Smoothies were creations I never tasted liked this before and were based on dates, bananas and almond milk. While the ‘Heaven on Earth’ had a strong raw chocolate flavor (raw cacao and cinnamon added), the ‘Essential Green’ included kale, avocado and coconut water, which made it taste a lot greener and healthier. Anyways, both were super delicious in their own ways! Since the starter from the daily menu (Hummus with Green Veggies and Roasted Eggplant with Quinoa, 95 AED) wasn’t available anymore, we picked the Pita Sandwich with Activated Crushed Walnuts, the Seaweed Pesto and a small salad with Avocado and Papaya.
The Seaweed Pesto was served on a bed of homemade guacamole and with raw linseed crackers and was the absolute highlight of the menu. The combination of Seaweed with Avocado was a unique, delicious, vegan experience I can only recommend trying. The portion was big enough to fill me up and the crackers were excellent as well. Next we tried the Pita Sandwiches, which were filled with tomato, cucumber, avocado, spring onions, tahini dressing and crushed walnuts. They were good, but compared to the Seaweed Pasta a little bit boring in taste.
Luckily the Salad with Avocado and Papaya made up for that again – garnished with Goji Berries and super fresh ingredients the taste was absolutely great. Additionally there are two more vegan salads (Italian Salad and Comptoir 102 All Green Salad), a Vegetable Sandwich and Avocado Crostini on the menu that are all vegan. Unfortunately I struggle making it out of my house during breakfast hours (unless I’ve got to work), but their breakfast menu sounds really promising not only including a Chia Seed Pudding and Buckwheat and Millet Raw Chocolate Porridge but also VEGAN PANCAKES (!).
Since we missed trying all these goodies we decided to try the homemade Matcha Avocado Ice Cream instead. It was served with crushed pistachios and super creamy and delicious. I have to admit this was my first time trying ice cream containing avocado and I was a little doubtful in the first place, since I love my ice cream sweet, but this one was rich in flavor (it had a sweet note as well) and great in texture and an amazing ending of my vegan dinner at Comptoir 102.
Comptoir 102 definitely deserves to be listed everywhere when it comes to vegan dining in Dubai, they’ve got a healthy and innovative breakfast, lunch and dinner menu, friendly and knowledgeable staff, who know how to please vegans and a great overall concept. Even though you can easily get cheaper vegan food in Dubai, don’t miss out spending a couple of hours here while you are around (bring your laptop and enjoy their free wifi)!
